“Before the Clouds Roll in”

Farmers of old have coined a phrase, “Make hay while the sun is shining”, to put across the idea of non procrastination and getting things done now, before it's too late. Waiting often risks the loss of opportunity, especially when you are not in control of what is coming...the sun going down or the clouds rolling in.

I remember laying on the beach, so many days, as a younger, less responsible adult, and soaking up the warm sun for hours on end. Every once in awhile, I'd squint open my eyes and peek to see how much blue was left up there and quickly scout out any coming clouds. The clouds meant that my time was just about up and I'd savour the last direct rays of pleasure and comfort.

As an older, more responsible sun lover, those rays of warmth and those rolling clouds are a little more symbolic. Slowing life down and trying to savour the moments with my kids, grandkids, family and friends is like those beach moments. Taking my time on a day when I get to stay home and work in the garden, clean a neglected corner or make a special dish I've been wanted to try, is like enjoying some warm rays of pleasure and a good shot of vitamin D...the stress reliever. Longer coffee breaks in the afternoon, sitting in the sun between “to do” list items, makes me happy....and feels good.

I no longer thrive on hours of sun bathing for the sake of my tan, because productivity and people mean more to this aging sun chaser now. Time with loves, quiet moments in nature and dream projects will be pursued and savoured while they can be.

I don't know how many more days I have in this glorious life, but I'll keep peeking up, watching for the clouds to roll in, and make the most of it while I can. I'm not in control of the weather, nor my ability to breathe, but I know the One who is, so I'll follow His good timetable and commands. And when the clouds roll in, I can trust His presence when life doesn't warm me much.

For now, I'm going to enjoy the grace.

Appreciate the opportunities.

And bask in the sunshine...

Before the clouds roll in.

“I have seen that nothing is better than that man should be happy in his activities, for that is his lot. For who will bring him to see what will occur after him?”
