Me and The Sea

I am in no way one of those people whose self confidence is their mainstay. Self love is not something I think we need to chase...I think we love ourselves pretty naturally. We might not “like” ourselves sometimes, but love...self preservation and defensiveness come pretty quickly. We are commanded to “love our neighbour, as we love ourselves”, meaning, the way we love ourselves. With that established and cleared out of the way, I do however think that many of us are not ok being alone or alone with God. We always seem to need someone else to prop us up or make life good. Could be our kids, our spouse or best friend, but it is a precious thing to be comfortable...even enjoy...being alone with yourself.

We were designed to be interdependent, but sometimes we have no choice but to be alone. It is very important to be ok with that. At this stage of my life, I almost giggle when I get an hour all alone! A completely quiet hour to think, sometimes out loud, and listen...in my case, and hopefully yours, to the Spirit. It is in these moments that we hear things, unheard at crowded times. The comfort of being by yourself is very therapeutic. It's an exercise that strengthens your soul and prepares you for those extended times of loneliness that may happen, for whatever reason.

You know how moms sometimes keep the “good dishes” for company? Well, sometimes we get dressed up for company, or get all dolled up for a date, but never take advantage of those solo dates and treat them special. In the craziness of life, pay attention to opportunities to retreat for a time, even if it's short, and value it...make it special. I'm not likely going to don a fancy gown for an evening by myself, but symbolically, it reminds me of how important these times are. Dinner for one? Could be. Or it might just be a long walk in the woods or on the beach...just me and the sea. Experiencing conversation with my Maker in the setting of His glorious creation, deep calling to deep. As a popular song goes...

"Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders;

Let me walk upon the waters

Wherever You would call me

Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander,

And my faith will be made stronger

In the presence of my Saviour."
