“Adam’s Ear”
Being a wife of 34 years, it's been a struggle to find the balance between helping my husband and “taking over” his leadership role in our family. Of course, I usually think my ideas and opinions are better than his or that he goes about things the wrong way, sometimes, but I need to be always aware of the Genesis curse. One of these post Fall consequences is the new desire a woman now has to take over, take control or even just influence men, especially husbands, too much. (Genesis 3:16)
Yes, we were made to help them, they need us and our perspective, but too much of a good thing is not good in this circumstance. God also created men to lead...they need to do that and are uniquely designed to do it. As Eve took the innocuous looking fruit that God explicitly forbade, Adam stood by silently. He watched and saw that she did not die immediately upon consumption, so he indulged as well. His disregard for God's protective direction and entertaining of the idea that His direction may not actually be protective, but maybe self serving and egotistical, led all of us into the mess we are in today...inevitable sin and death.
His lovely wife, built with a less discerning and more nurturing wiring, and at the pushing of the serpent Satan, tempted her husband to question God's directive. MY...I...NEVER...DO...THAT!!!! I have learned to be VERY careful not to insert MY desires and MY way of thinking in my husband's decision making. His decisions must be his, because HE will be held responsible for them, not me, and what a heavy burden that is for him to carry. (Romans 5:12-21)
Gender specific roles and gifts are so important and under attack these days. I don't want to give in to the politically correctness of that and steal the glory of our very special male counterparts...nor our Creator's beautiful plan for family and relationships. I will always give my opinion and help him where he needs it, but may I never steal Adam's ear from my Savior, Lord and Father.
